During the tenure of this reward, I intended to conduct research in the field of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles. Through this research, I plan to contribute to the existing knowledgebase in robotics and foster a positive contribution of robotics to society. Also, I intend to improve my analytical skills and become a more versatile thinker which, I believe, will enable me to help contribute to science and society as a whole.

Receiving this grant has allowed me to focus entirely on my academic development and for this I am very grateful. The Werner Graupe International Fellowship in Engineering will play a major role in reaching my academic objectives and I would, once again, like to thank you for this.

"Not everyone who studies abroad necessarily appreciates the worth of cross-cultural immersion, but in my case it was more than just a concept. The experience was incredibly important to me.

"I don’t know how my life would have worked out without that fellowship and without those years at McGill, but I am truly indebted to everyone who made that investment in me."

This award had a great and unique impact on my studies. Personally, my time in Calgary was the longest coherent period of time I spent abroad and I had never been to Canada before. The necessity of adapting to different academic and social environments was probably the most valuable challenge for me, and the confidence I built while studying in Calgary will help me in many other situations in my life. Due to the award I was not only able to learn from my peers at the University of Calgary, but was also able to participate in two AIESEC conferences in Saskatoon and Ottawa. My experience living in Calgary also allowed me to perfect my English, which will undoubtedly prove advantageous in my professional life.

It is an honour to have received an award from the Antje Graupe Pryor Foundation as a foreigner and to be so openly and warmly welcomed to Canada. Additionally, a lot of my worries regarding financing my exchange to Calgary were alleviated – I am certain that I could not have covered the expenses of my travels to Canada without support.

After being inspired by the great experiences I had in Calgary earlier this year, I intend to integrate travelling into my studies as I move forward into a Masters Degree program.

I want to thank the Antje Graupe Pryor Foundation sincerely for the irreplaceable experience I had in Calgary. I hope that the Foundation can continue to help students like myself by allowing them the experience of living and studying abroad.

"That year I spent abroad was themost important of my life, and that’s no exaggeration. It had a tremendous impact on who I am and what I’ve become.

"My fascination with other countries and other cultures was sparked during those trips my girlfriend and I were able to take from our home base in Paris. And that never would have happened without the opportunity to study at ESTACA."

Thanks to the Werner Graupe funding in the past academic year, I have been able to attend two workshops that had a deep impact on my research. In September 2010, I participated in the workshop "Mathematical Foundations of Mechanical Biology", organized at the Banff International Research Station for Mathematical Innovation and Discovery (BIRS) in Banff (AB, Canada). In October 2010, I was selected to be one of 20 participants at the "Optical Microscopy & Imaging in the Biomedical Sciences" course offered at the Marine Biological Laboratory (Woods Hole, MA, US). Through these courses, I had the chance to acquire different mathematical and experimental tools that I am currently using to investigate cardiovascular tissue remodeling, as well as to get exposed to the relevant work of other research groups in the same field.

Receiving this scholarship motivates me to keep my goals and expectations high. Just yesterday I was informed that my very first paper has been accepted for publication in the Journal of the Mechanical Behavior of Biomedical Materials, which is the No. 4 ranked journal (of 25) in the biomaterials field and the No. 8 ranked journal (of 59) in the biomedical engineering field. In March I also submitted two other papers to the Journal of Biomechanics and I am waiting to receive the peer-reviews from the Editor.

I deeply thank you for your trust and willingness to help me. I will do my best to make the most of out of your support in the coming years.
